We’ve all wondered the same question: How will I squeeze something the size of a watermelon out from between my legs without being split in two?

The short answer is, this is what we were made for. Our bodies are capable of miraculous things that will ensure you deliver that beautiful baby of yours; one way or another. Whether you’ve just started playing around with a due date calendar or you’re in your third trimester, here are three ways to give birth to a baby; that you might not have considered before.

Home birth

If you don’t like the idea of giving birth in a hospital, you can always opt to have a home birth instead. Being at home means you can have a positive birth experience. This is because you’re in an environment that makes you feel safe and calm.

Home births also mean ruling out any unwanted medical interventions, while receiving hands-on help from a midwife. A midwife will monitor you and your baby’s heart regularly to reduce any potential risks that may arise.

Birth pool

Whether you’re at home or in the hospital, you can choose to give birth in a birthing pool. The relaxing effect of the water will provide a soothing sensation that will help you relax and allow your labour to progress. We all take a warm bath when our muscles ache, so a water birth is the same concept!

Having a water birth may help your body release more of the labour hormone; oxytocin; which stimulates your contractions to be strong and regular. It will also help release more endorphins to help you cope with the pain.

Whether you choose to have a home or hospital birth, it’s important to have a good breathing technique that will keep your body relaxed and focused on the task ahead. Hypnobirthing training is a great way to manage pain and can be used alongside or without traditional pain relief.

Hypnobirthing classes are usually taught in small groups or one-to-one sessions. The program has been developed with your partner in mind, so they can play a more active role in bringing your baby into the world.
